Writing Web Content that People will Read - Part I
Do you remember the days when people took speed reading courses? In this computer age, we've all learned to quickly scan a screen and pull out parts that interest us - in a matter of seconds.
So while it's tempting to wax lyrical about your fantastic product or service on your website, you need to remember that most readers scan the screen. Very few people read every word, so it's essential to keep your content short and sweet.
Here are some great tips for keeping your readers interested to the end.
- Less is More
It's an old adage - Less is more. We know it's true, but when faced with empty white space, we get uneasy and want to fill it. Apart from the blood, sweat and tears wasted writing something people won't read, it helps to remember that too much text actually turns readers away.
- Bold Headings and Bullet Points
Arranging your content in a reader-friendly fashion helps your reader locate important information. Draw your reader's eye and break up paragraphs with bold headings and bullet points.
- Keep Paragraphs Short
A very effective way to keep your content short is limiting your paragraphs to one or two sentences. Be ruthless and cut your paragraphs down to this limit.
- Keep Content Organised
Written content must be organised to be read quickly. Group related information on the same page so your readers don't have to go searching through your site. They probably won't. Remember, Internet users have notoriously short attention spans.
Using these tips should make writing web and newsletter content a much faster and easier exercise. No more procrastinating about updating your website - it takes very little time to write content that is short and sweet!
